Addiction is a mental disorder. According to experts, it’s easier for the brain to develop another mental disorder if it already struggles with one. For example, it’s easier for people to develop a drug addiction if they suffer from depression. Although drug dependency and addiction are different, doctors still believe there’s a link.
The National Institutes of Health says half of all people with drug dependency suffer from other mental disorders. Some of the most common mental disorders that accompany chemical dependency include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.
Even people who have no risk factors for chemical dependency can develop it. They don’t have to have a history of family substance abuse, either. Although they have the choice to start using drugs, they lose that choice once dependency takes over.
