Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Recovery journeys inevitably bring about difficult moments. When men and women struggle with addiction, it’s important for them to develop strategies to effectively cope with life’s obstacles. They’ll also need a strategy to overcome negative thoughts and feelings. Therapists at Serenity Lodge use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to strengthen our Guests’ recovery.

What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT) is a psychotherapy that helps individuals embrace life’s difficulties. ACT is a variation on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in that it also challenges men and women to change negative behaviors. The therapy maximizes an individual’s well-being by teaching him or her to overcome negative thoughts and feelings.

Commitment plays a major role in ACT. Not only does it teach men and women to embrace their difficult situations and character defects, it also requires a commitment to change. When individuals take an action against their addiction, real recovery can begin.

The Beauty of Acceptance

The Serenity Prayer encourages Guests to accept the things they cannot change and the courage to change the things they can. Obsessing over things we can’t control isn’t conducive to a successful recovery. ACT tells you to accept your reality and work towards positivity.

Our therapists at Serenity Lodge offer acceptance strategies for Guests, including:

  • Embracing feelings or thoughts without succumbing to impulse
  • Acknowledging your weaknesses while maximizing your strengths
  • Realizing that you don’t have to be great at everything
  • Facing your difficulties head on and not running from them

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Teaches Us Defusion

Defusion takes environmental and behavioral triggers into account and allows you to make difficult situations more manageable. Instead of rationalizing negative thoughts and feelings, individuals begin to see things for what they really are.

Helpful defusion techniques include:

  • Observing what you’re feeling
  • Deciding whether or not your interpretations are reality-based
  • Re-evaluating your thoughts and feelings to develop a more positive outlook on life

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Encourages New Positive Thoughts and Behaviors

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy at Serenity Lodge has helped Guests embrace their difficult situations and move toward positive behaviors. We utilize this treatment approach in both individual and group counseling so that our Guests can maximize their recovery efforts.

Our experienced counselors and therapists, many of whom are in active recovery, understand our Guests’ needs and the importance of a solid recovery foundation.

ACT has helped numerous men and women attain long-lasting sobriety, and under Serenity Lodge’s guidance, it can help you, too.
