Gender-responsive individual counseling sets the foundation for change at Serenity Lodge Lake Arrowhead. It allows men and women to address their substance abuse issues with a qualified counselor who understands the addiction process—in most cases first hand, since the majority of our staff is in active recovery themselves. This form of counseling can also address co-occurring mental disorders. In these cases, dual diagnosis treatment is vital, because treating an addiction without treating the underlying mental illness won’t lead to a successful recovery.

Individual Counseling

What is the Goal of Individual Counseling?

We don’t take a “one-size fits all” approach to individual counseling at Serenity Lodge. While sobriety is a universal end goal, gender-responsive individual therapy can help men and women get through existing or past trauma, develop healthier interpersonal relationships, improve their outlook on life, and work toward stronger mental and emotional health.

What Happens at an Individual Counseling Session?

Typically, therapists conduct individual counseling sessions lasting 45 minutes to an hour. Depending upon program intensity, sessions can be weekly, multiple times a week, or even daily. Conversations with your therapists are completely confidential, unless Guests insinuate harming themselves or others.

Utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Among other evidence-based methods, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are two highly effective techniques used to maximize your individual counseling experience, as well as your long-term recovery.

Serenity Lodge uses CBT to transform addictive behaviors. It encourages and embraces change within men and women, preparing them for a more productive post-treatment life. Certain irrational beliefs stunted their growth for so long that the best course of action is to change them.

ACT is a branch off of the CBT tree. Our therapists encourage Guests to embrace their difficult situations and move toward positive behaviors.

How Can Patients Get the Most Out of Individual Therapy?

In order for Serenity Lodge Guests to get the most out of their counseling, we encourage you to do the following:

  • Be punctual and on-time to your appointments
  • Ask questions
  • Let our therapists know if something makes you uncomfortable
  • Open up as much as possible
  • Be patient, as recovery doesn’t happen overnight
