What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (or ACT) is a psychotherapy that helps individuals embrace life’s difficulties. ACT is a variation on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in that it challenges men and women to change negative behaviors. The therapy also maximizes an individual’s well-being by teaching him or her to overcome negative thoughts and feelings.  

Commitment plays a major role in ACT. Not only does it teach men and women to embrace their difficult situations and character defects, but it also requires a commitment to change. In fact, when individuals take an action against their addiction, real recovery can begin.
